Red Ginseng
홍삼

A classic Korean gift category, but formats and concentration vary a lot.

Korean red ginseng
Red ginseng is processed ginseng, not simply a red-colored root.
FOOD BACKGROUND · 홍삼

Red ginseng is processed ginseng, not simply a red-colored root.

Fresh ginseng is steamed and dried to make red ginseng, changing its color, aroma and composition. Korean shops sell whole roots, slices, concentrates, drinks, sticks, candies and tablets. For travelers, the useful comparison is not “which box looks most premium?” but the actual red-ginseng content, serving size, added sweeteners and product format.

How it is usually eaten

Whole or sliced products may be infused or chewed; concentrated extracts and stick packs are taken according to the labeled serving instructions. Strong extracts are not the same thing as ordinary tea.

Where to buy

CheongKwanJang stores, department stores, airport duty-free shops and large supermarkets.

What to look for

Compare extract, stick, candy and drink formats. Read serving size and ingredient percentage instead of assuming every red-ginseng product is equivalent.

Packing & storage

Keep unopened products as directed on the label. Check destination-country customs rules before travel.

Grocery, not Dine

This guide is for buying food products. For restaurants and places to eat, use Dine.

Local buying tip

For a formal gift, branded boxed sticks or extract are common. For personal use, smaller stick packs are easier to carry.
