Four Korean superfoods
worth knowing

This guide separates what is actually documented from what is merely trendy language. Korean-origin products are sold abroad, but we do not claim an item-specific viral boom without evidence.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Compare the four.

구기자Korean Goji Berry

Goji berries are cultivated in Korea and sold overseas as Korean Goji Berry. The trend wording has been updated: rather than calling it a sudden craze, we describe goji as a superfood that has been building U.S. awareness since the 2000s and is being re-examined in the U.S. now. A Kyunghyang Shinmun feature published Aug. 24, 2026 by senior reporter Jang Hoe-jeong highlighted that renewed attention. Los Angeles Times reporting from Aug. 5, 2009 had already described goji as virtually unknown in the U.S. five years earlier but by then seemingly everywhere in granola, supplements and other products.

Buying & packing: Find dried berries and tea at Yangnyeongsi, herbal shops and online. Dried sealed products are shelf-stable; check destination rules for plant products. Nutrition reference for about 28 g dried goji: roughly 3.6 g dietary fiber, 1.9 mg iron and 13.6 mg vitamin C. Goji also contains zeaxanthin, vitamin A, zinc and antioxidant compounds. Zeaxanthin is associated with retinal protection, while vitamin C and zinc support normal immune function. Safety: case reports describe a potential interaction with warfarin, including elevated INR and bleeding. If you take warfarin or another anticoagulant, or use regular prescription medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using concentrated goji products.

오미자Omija

The red “five-flavor berry” is grown in Korean mountain regions and used for tea, syrup and dried-fruit products. Korean Omija is also sold overseas, without claiming an item-specific boom.

Buying & packing: Look for dried fruit, tea and extract at herbal markets, large marts and direct sellers. Sealed dried products travel well; plant-import rules vary by country.

백수오Baeksuo

A Korean functional-food ingredient often discussed alongside red ginseng. Reporting has specifically identified it as a material Korea can produce and develop as an export category.

Buying & packing: Buy from specialist herbal or health-functional-food sellers and check the exact ingredient name and percentage. Packaged products travel well, but supplement rules differ by country.

상황버섯Sanghwang mushroom

A medicinal mushroom sold as Korean-origin dried slices and extracts, including through overseas herbal specialists and marketplaces.

Buying & packing: Specialist shops in Yangnyeongsi, health-food stores and online. Dried products are shelf-stable, but mushroom and plant import rules can be stricter than ordinary snacks.

Goji trend sources

Kyunghyang Shinmun · Aug. 24, 2026 · senior reporter Jang Hoe-jeong, “집에서 매일 물로 마시던 건데, 갑자기 미국서 슈퍼푸드로 떴다고?···몰랐던 구기자의 매력”. Historical U.S. context: Los Angeles Times · Aug. 5, 2009 · David Karp, “Goji plays hard to get in U.S.” Medical safety context: published case reports on goji–warfarin interaction. These references support the trend and safety notes; they are not endorsements.

WHERE TO BUY

Where these make the most sense to shop.

Seoul Yangnyeongsi

The best place to compare specialist dried herbs and functional ingredients shop by shop. For first-time buyers, favor established sellers and clearly labeled origin, ingredient and weight.

Large marts & online

Tea, extracts and consumer-ready packs may also appear in large-mart health sections. For repeat buying after your trip, direct sellers and cross-border e-commerce are often more practical.
